LET'S STOP SPAM!
|
IDENTIFY SPAM Did you consent verbally or in writing the receiving of promotional emails?
Does the message contain clear information about the sender or those authorizing the emails?
Can you easily unsubscribe to the emails?
DEALING WITH SPAM Don't just delete the email, unsubscribe from their mailing list. But be warned, if you have never heard of the identity of the sender or business concerned then it could be a fraudulent spammer and therefore DO NOT enter any of your information and DO NOT submit your email address for unsubscribe.
Sending unsubscribe in the subject field without text in the body of the email can also work.
EDUCATING SPAMMERS If you want to take this further you can complain to the owner or manager of the business and state that they are in breach of the law as you never gave them consent to email you.
This is what I now send: "To Whom It May Concern, I just received this email from you and would like to know if I had given permission to you or a third party to receive such promotion emails. Could you please provide me with the relevant details. However, if I had not given such consent I would like to let you know that this is unsolicited spam. Please be aware that without written consent from me or any other receivers of your unsolicited emails, promotional email are considered illegal spam. If you would like to find out more please visit the ACMA website: www.acma.gov.au."
PUNISHING SPAMMERS Read up on the law and lodge a complaint with the ACMA.
